Sex Definitely Sells

The female Fab Four struck gold at the US box office over the weekend, cashing in on the audience’s thirst for more sex. Sex and the City took the film world by storm, earning a higher-than-expected $56.8 million, pretty impressive for a film aimed particularly on women.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis proved that the show’s popularity has not waned the past few years, since the show ended. What it did though, was renew the interest of many and made others check it out to see what it was all about.

It was enough starpower to dethrone previous box office champion Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which added another $44 million to its treasure chest and now stands at a whopping total of $215 million in just two weeks. not bad for a grizzled film icon whose last outing was almost two decades ago.

The last time our hero filled movie houses, I was still wearing khaki shorts to school. Now that Harrison Ford, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have collaborated once more for another adventure epic with our favorite archaeologist, I feel like I am a child once more.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is not the best film you will see all year. I am not even sure if you could say it belongs to the original films in the series. However, it is basically a nostalgic trip hence it is still fun. If you will allow it to entertain you, it will. The effects are there, the humor is there, the coolness is still there.

What is missing though, is the freshness. The story seems a bit forced and the set pieces are, well, devices aimed to be eye candy. Not the worst thing in the world but for a fil of this magnitude, it failed to meet my expectations.

Harrison Ford is still a great Indy. Shia LaBeouf is capable from time to time. Cate Blanchett is not the best villain ever but she is not annoying either. Karen Allen, while relegated to such a middling presence, manages to pull of here role with aplomb. This film is strictly for fans.

Bad Actors, Big Salaries

After our article about Keanu Reeves, it made me think of other big celebrities who are known to do nothing in front of the camera yet get the big paychecks and are even adored by many. Call it envy but good-looking stars are not going to cut it for me if they cannot act to save their rear ends. Speaking of rear ends…

Richard Gere - Yes, I have also heard of that gerbil rumor. This is not about that story. Let us take a look at this overrated and overpaid actor. His success is mostly from how people remembered his co-stars. Pretty Woman is all about Julia Roberts. Primal Fear was all about Edward Norton. Hell, Chicago was all about everything else! All he does is say his lines in the most unconvincing manner and this guy gets soem attention?

Paul Walker - this guy makes Keanu Reeves look like Daniel-Day Lewis. I mean, he is not even trying at all! Have you seen his films? The Fast and the Furious seemed like the perfect film for him to prove that he can outperform some other people. Instead, Vin Diesel got away with his voice. If bad acting was a crime, he would have been a lifer in prison.

Matthew McConaughey - This is what this idiot does in every film: Take off his shirt and speak in a Souther drawl. Girls go ga-ga and he laughs all the way to the bank. Blame those Sexiest Men lists. This guy gets paid for the way he looks and not for his acting. No arguments.

14.04.08 Whoa, Keanu!

What to make of Keanu Reeves? I am not sure. Do we call him an actor or simply on of the luckiest stars in Hollywood? Is he nothing more than eye candy or does he actually offer something different?
See, this is one of the best in the business in terms of landing plum roles. Take […]

12.04.08 Box Office Kings

This weekend’s showdown at the box office will mark the return of Keanu Reeves in an action flick. Just a straight-up guy film. On the other end of the spectrum, Prom Night tries to cash in on the teenagers’ desire to watch something scary, not to mention stupid. Both films will try to unseat two-time […]
