Box Office Couple

A comedy about two straight men who pretend to be a gay couple dislodged a boy wizard from the top spot at the U.S. box office. In case you had forgotten, we are still right smack at the middle of the summer movie season. The more outrageous the plot, the bigger the potential in the box office.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry amassed $34.8 million over the weekend, just enough to topple the previous top movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The fifth installment of the successful franchise settled for second place with $32.2 million. It now has totaled $207.5 million in the U.S. alone. Not bad for a film that is facing huge competition even from its own.

See, the release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book may have taken away some of its thunder, thus the drop. Of course, Adam Sandler, along with Kevin James and Jessica Biel also had something to do with it. The ironic thing is, this is Sandler’s lowest opening gross in years. Well, I guess you can’t win ‘em all. Do not, however, assume that it won’t cross the century million mark. Don’t bet on it at all.
