National Treasure: Book of Secrets led the weekend box office that saw its share of ups and critical downs. In the weekend leading to the most critical of holidays in the season, the sequel generated big business that just gave clues to how succesful the franchise could really be. Nicolas Cage reprised his role and audiences seemed to respond favorably/
The film took in a ubiquitous $45.5 million in three days to catapult it to the top spot and sending previous champ I Am Legend to second place. Four other new releases had different results though in an otherwise spectacular financial weekend for the U.S. box office.
Charlie Wilson’s War debuted in fourth place with a repectable $9.6 million debut while Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street came in fifth with an estimated take of $9.35 million. Still, the latter was more impressive since it opened in half as many theaters as the former. The other newcomers were more disappointing releases. P.S. I Love You came in sixth but it was Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story had the more unexpected tumble to eight.
