For Eddie Murphy to not agree to return to a succesful film, it is quite an omen that the said film is a disaster waiting to happen. And it did happen. To Cuba Gooding Jr., of all people. For an Oscar winner to attempt to make an all-time low in film history speaks a lot of just how bad his career has stalled. No wait, his career has not stalled. It ceased.
For those who have not yet noticed, Daddy Day Camp is a sequel to Daddy Day Care, the film that continued Eddie Murphy’s streak of family movies success in Hollywood. The sequel just succeeded in continuing Cuba Gooding Jr.’s miseries. It emphasized that the star has to get better material or he would keep on making films that do not even deserve to be made, much less a direct-to-video flick. Critics have eviscerated on the film and audiences trooped to cinemas. Just not the ones screening it.
In fact, the film barely managed to register in the box office trackings, tallying a pathetic $4 milluion on its opening weekend. Clearly, viewers chose to stay home and watch re-runs than bear with suffering through another tepid effort from the actor.
