The marketing of The Golden Compass has somewhat diverted from the merits of the film lately. Rather, it has focused on answering accusations regarding the controversial nature of the film as well as how it diverts from the source. Not even the involvement of soem high-profile stars and the way the film looks like is being paid with attention lately.
Some sectors have alleged that key themes from the novel, the rejection of organized religion and the abuse of power in a fictionalized church. However, director Chris Weitz had retorted that the film does not reference these said themes directly. Still, several groups have called for a boycott of The Golden Compass.
This could turn out either a bnane or a boon for the picture’s box office fortunes. It could be recalled that despite the backlash and repeated calls from Catholic groups, The Da Vinci Code made a huge splash in the worldwide box office.
