After the way it demolished the January box office record and the intense marketing campaign that preceded the release, Cloverfield looked to be a safe box office monster. The initial figures indicated a monstrous hit. However, Hollywood pundits are beginning to question its success.
After all, it has tumbled out of favor in most filmgoers’ list of films. In fact, 27 Dresses ranks higher in the box office charts, testament to its staying power. While the monster flick has taken in over $71 million to date, a lot of people are questioning why it has since slowed down in the weeks afetr the highly-anticipated release.
In my opinion, Cloverfield is a definite success. In terms of its budget, it is a big hit. A blockbuster it is not, though. After all, it should have crossed the century dollar mark by now if it was such a film. Still, give credit for making it avoid the distinction of becoming a colossal disappointment.
