This may be a shock to the system to some, especially Rocky fans. I am a Rocky Balboa fan. I really believe this is one of the best film franchises EVER. That being said, I felt Rocky II was overrated and it is only the fourth best film in the series.
Why so? First, I have to admit I loved how they started the film. That final sequence in the original brought back memories even if you are actually doing a Rocky marathon at home with your friends. It was a tremendous way to kick things off. Even the succeeding moments were a stroke of genius.
Remember the scenes where Rocky and Adrian were shopping and him wasting his money by splurging on almost every material thing he sees? That’s what someone like Rocky would actually do with that oodles of money! Stallone got that one right. Of course, if there was a robot during those days…
Well, Apollo Creed won’t accept the fact that fight fans question his victory and experts pointing out that he simply carried the Italian Stallion throughout the fight for Philly’s sake or whatever. So, he seeks out a rematch. Imagine his chagrin over fighting Rocky one more time despite his belief that it was just one of those days.
This film also introduced viewers just how dumb Rocky really is. He just ain’t good with money. Everything he had after the fight? POOF! That was something Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith) should have thought him aside from women weakening the legs.
So, for the second straight time, Rocky and Apollo collide for the heavyweight title. Again, Rocky shows no defense whatsoever. Every jab stings him. Yet his heart is something else. He once again shows his will power and resiliency, not to mention his egg yolk-powered heavy punches that also takes it toll on the champ.
So, you ask: what the hell is my problem ranking it to number four? Simple. The way it ended.
Okay. I know it happened before in history. However, did you see how they executed it? It was way too dramatic, way too cliched and just too ignorant for me to handle. There was no way I could accept that ending. Why not end it with a lucky punch and a clean knockout instead of that double knockdown that became the inspiration of too many WWE matches?
It was a good film until that ending in my opinion. i just liked it a bit. Then they ruined it with that one.
