What was expected by many as a semi-blockbuster turned out to be quite a sleeper hit, if only it did not have such expectations. See, Will Ferrell is usually predicted to be tops on most everything. He did top the weekend box office with Semi-Pro. Barely.

The basketball comedy opened up with a weak $15.3 million to get to first place. As Ferrell films go, this one is quite a disappointing outing for the funnyman who had enjoyed tremendous openings lately. This one seems to be a brick though. After all, it barely edged a holdover.

Speaking of the holdover, Vantage Point gave a good fight to place second in its second weekend of release. It took in a respectable $13 million. Quite a drop but considering the competition, it was more than enough for its sophomore weekend. At least its opening weekend was well on the expectation.
