You may have heard a lot of these rumblings. In Hollywood, every film franchise is susceptible to such. Case in point: Spider-Man 3. That one, despite being such a huge blockbuster, received the brunt of a lot of critics and fans for being an example of a bad sequel. Nope, that was an understatement: I meant to say unworthy.

Now, the box office race for the summer begins with Shrek The Third coming out this weekend. Hold on that thought though, this one looks to be as certain a success as it is an ugly film. For now, we’ll talk about my initial reaction to this film.

The last film was a huge success and was still funny. I must admit, that surpassed my expectations. It was supposed to be just one of those forgettable installments. Instead, I was quite entertained. However, one could already see that it was no longer as great as the original. So, no more sequels. Let Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz do something else.

Now, the producers rounded up the whole gang for a another crack at it. Yet, from the looks of it, my fears for the second film would be realized WITH THIS FILM. Rehashed jokes, rotten ideas, unoriginal situations. In short, they are simply doing it based on a template. Bottomline: this ogre has to retire.
