Summer Surprises

With the summer season officially ending, it is high time we look at the films which surprised a lot of people, critics, fans and box office analysts, with their stellar performance at the box office. These three films more than made up for what the summer blockbusters were expected to do. Thing is, these three films far exceeded the expectations leveled at their products. Instead, they have become far better newsworthy articles for years to come.

Superbad is one of the two surprises from the team of director Judd Apatow and writer/star Seth Rogen, the other being Knocked Up. However, the teen comedy romp did not have recognizable stars and was in a more laidback month of August. With a two-week rule at the box office, it became a bigger surprise than anyone could ever imagine. Moreover, it was well-loved by the critics, rare for a teen comedy these days.

Hairspray may not have reached the top spot at the box office race. It surely boasted a stellar cast. However, being a musical and a remake of a pretty unrecognized film, it sure was amazing to tally those kind of numbers. Plus, people are still singing the tunes from the flick. Not bad for a film that has John Travolta playing a woman.

Waitress is not a runaway hit at all. It is a modest hit at best. Still, for an indie film that starred an actress still known for being in a television show that roused fans because of a haircut, their gross is a feat nonetheless.
