Sweeney Todd Review

Trust director Tim Burton to make a weird film become a masterpiece. Believe that Johnny Depp is an actor who cannot do anything wrong these days. In Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the duo manages to top their previous collaborations and may have achieved the most intriguing musicals of all-time.

The revenge-themed flick may be too much for many people but not for Burton faithfuls. Here, he may have displayed his brilliance in capturing the essence of the original musical and gives viewers a different kind of experience. Burton has found a story in which he transcends the usual enre and somehow makes full use of his talents.

As with Depp, he continues to surprise me. He may not be the bset singer I have ever heard onscreen but I think he is the only one who could have pulled off this role. As the vengeful barber, he was able to portray every emotion, sometimes with just a squint. You would forget he is in a musical by the way he shows his emotions.

Alan Rickman also delivers as the antagonist. While Sacha Baron Cohen had few scenes, he made his mark and had the funniest scenes in the flick. Helena Bonham Carter may have been miscast at the first part of the film but she eventually pulls through in the end. The film may not be flawless but the story, the direction and Depp made this one of the best films out of 2007.
