It was supposed to be an interesting pair. After all, they have had their share of hits in the past. They are two of the most beautiful people in Hollywood, according to many magazines. Tehy have had their share of the spotlight.
So why did Vacancy not do pretty well in the U.S. Box Office?
There are a number of reasons behind that, in my opinion. This film that revolves around a couple who spends the night at a local motel suffered due to:
1) Timing is everything – again, a lot of producers do not realize this main aspect. Similar to the fate suffered by Grindhouse and Pathfinder, two genre films targeted at young viewers and fanboys that flunked because of their release date coincided with the run of 300, Vacancy ran smack into Disturbia.
That film was number one a week ago. It catered to the same audience that was supposed to flock into this suspense film. Turns out, people could only stomach so much suspense in a month. Kate and Luke were one week too late.
Casting – not that Wilson and Beckinsale are bad actors or not popular enough. Its just that, these are not their roles audiences want them to see in. Wilson has captured fans when he is involved with the Frat Pack or in romantic comedies. Beckinsale is a strong female figure more accustomed to films such as Underworld and Van Helsing. Otehrwise, put her in a supporting role.
Critical Reception – while it did not result to bad reviews, they could not rely on word-of-mouth either to improve their numbers. This is as good as it gets for Vacancy. It’s all downhill from here.
